Slow Fashion: SUSTAINABILITY.
We've been talking a lot about SLOW FASHION lately here at fashionABLE. We've mentioned the 3 reasons we're taking it slow: SUSTAINABILITY, SUPPLY CHAIN, + STORY. For the next 3 weeks, we'll be going into a little more detail on these areas. First up: SUSTAINABILITY.
To sustain is to maintain, to support, or to endure. Creating sustainable business in Africa involves all 3 of those things... Let's start with the idea of maintaining. Anybody who has ever had to raise money knows that long-term, consistent fundraising can be challenging. Of course we know that charity and aid is indeed critical -- there are people in the world that are in desperate need of food, medical assistance, and clean water -- but we believe that the solution to ending poverty really has to do with economics... something that we can maintain. It is about doing trade with developing nations, tying them in to the worldwide economy and giving them manufacturing opportunities.Buying a fashionABLE product is to support an entire shift in the global marketplace. And you are not only supporting the women who are currently making our products, but you are also investing in the creation of more jobs: in skills training and capacity building that allows these businesses to grow and impact entire communities and countries. The goal of sustainable development is that what we are investing in right now will endure for generations to come. As we start to make conscious decisions about who makes our stuff, and start to care about how it's made, we choose to support systems that are creating opportunity with jobs that promote dignity, hope and confidence. That's where the lasting change happens.
We'd love to hear from you ... how has supporting fashionABLE + other businesses that are committed to slow fashion changed your view on global poverty and the way you purchase?
